Greencastle-Antrim gets past Northern York

GREENCASTLE – It wasn’t exactly pretty, but it was Greencastle-Antrim’s 10th win of the season.

The Blue Devils found themselves in a low-scoring grind Tuesday night against an improving Northern York squad. Although pressed down the stretch, G-A managed to hit enough key shots in the closing quarter to secure a 33-25 Mid-Penn Colonial Division girls’ basketball victory.

“We knew it was going to be that type of physical, defensive game,” Greencastle coach Mike Rhine said. “They’re getting a lot better, and they had a nice game plan. We just made a few more shots when we needed to.”

Holding a 22-17 lead at the end of the third, two clutch buckets by Ashley True complemented a trio of free throws by Sayge Wilhide, creating a comfortable cushion for G-A (10-3) with less than three minutes remaining. A 3-ball by McKenna Rakaczewski put the game away, pushing the lead to double digits before closing out the eight-point win.

“Ashley played really well tonight, hitting some big shots inside,” Rhine said. “She just does everything we ask her to do, and those baskets tonight were critical.”

With offense hard to come by, Wilhide’s nine points led the Blue Devils. True followed with six points and nine rebounds while Lydia Crist and Madison Sweitzer both added five points in the win.

“There are just some minor miscues that we need to correct to really get this thing going,” Rhine said. “But, those are things we can fix moving forward.”

G-A returns to action Friday night at home against Boiling Springs. Weather permitting, the Blue Devils are then scheduled to participate in Saturday’s Gettysburg Showcase event before crucial Colonial Division contests against Big Spring and Shippensburg next week.
