Greencastle-Antrim girls’ basketball survived a second-half run from Conrad Weiser to take a 57-52 win in the District 3 Class AAAA final for their first District 3 title in program history.
The Blue Devils sunk seven 3-pointers in the first half, including back-to-back buckets from Jenay Faulkner and Jane Herman at the end of the first to put the Blue Devils up by nine at the end of the first quarter.
Conrad Weiser chipped away at the lead early in the second quarter, taking a 4-0 run and keeping the Blue Devils scoreless for the first three minutes until Hannah Crist sunk a 3. She followed up with a layup and Jane Herman and Faulkner added back-to-back 3s to bring the lead to 15 points at the end of the first half.
Greencastle-Antrim stretched the lead to as much as 18 points through the first three minutes of the third quarter off a 3 from Faulkner and two buckets from Kate Gelsinger.
With a little more than four minutes left in the third quarter, Conrad Weiser took off on 10-0 run sparked by a Hannah Racis and-one. Heading into the final quarter the Scouts had cut the deficit to seven points with a 44-37 score.
Greencastle-Antrim opened the fourth quarter with two turnovers in the first minute and Anouk Ooms had an early layup to bring the deficit to five points. Faulkner finally drove for a layup with six minutes left in the game, then sunk two free throws a minute later to bring the lead back up to a comfortable nine points.
The Scouts, which had gone 3 of 11 through the first 6:40 of the final quarter, got back on the board with two free throws from TaCari Talford. One minute later, Chelsea Erkes' jumper brought the deficit to four points, and Talford headed back to the line with 17.2 seconds to go to make it 54-52, Greencastle-Antrim. But the Blue Devils went to the line two more times before the final buzzer and Gelsinger and Crist went 3-of-4 combined to prevent the late comeback.
Racis led the Scouts with 16 points and Talford added 11. Faulkner led all scorers with 20 points and Crist had 12.
