Lancaster Catholic holds off Greencastle-Antrim, advances to District 3-AAA semifinals

RECAP

Caroline Scarff led a balanced attack with 18 points, and Lancaster Catholic held off hard-charging Greencastle-Antrim 59-52 in a District 3-AAA girls’ basketball quarterfinal game Saturday afternoon at Dallastown.

Danielle Atkinson added 14 points and Emily Colon chipped in with 13 points for the Crusaders, who vaulted to an 18-7 first-quarter lead and led 30-25 at the half.

Greencastle-Antrim, the No. 3 seed and Mid-Penn Colonial champ and conference semifinalist, used a 14-11 third-quarter run to slice Lancaster Catholic’s lead down to 41-39.

But the Crusaders, seeded No. 6 and the L-L Section 4 champs and league semifinalists, scored 18 fourth-quarter points and held off the Blue Devils.

 

WHAT’S NEXT

Lancaster Catholic (24-2) will square off against No. 10 West Perry, which knocked out defending district champ Palmyra 42-25 in another quarterfinal on Saturday.

Crusaders vs. Mustangs is Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. in the Giant Center.

Greencastle-Antrim (22-2) will square off against Palmyra in a district playback game on Tuesday at 5 p.m. at CD East. The loser there is eliminated and the winner goes to the fifth-place game and qualifies for the PIAA playoffs.

DISTRICT 3-AAA BRACKET

Lancaster Catholic has won 15 District 3 championships — 12 in Class AAA. West Perry was won a Class AAA title in 1995, sandwiched between a pair of Crusaders’ crowns.

 

SHOWDOWN

Lancaster Catholic, No. 8, and Greencastle-Antrim, No. 9, came into Saturday’s quarterfinal in the top 10 in PennLive’s Class AAA state rankings.

Freshman Jenay Faulkner popped in a game-high 20 points for Greencastle-Antrim on Saturday. In three postseason games, she’s averaging 18.7 points with five 3-pointers. … Chloe Hoover and Hannah Crist added 11 points apiece and Katie Gelsinger pitched in with 10 points for the Blue Devils; Crist splashed three 3s. … Scarff’s 18-point output was much needed; she was held to a season-low 2 points in the first round against Susquenita, and Scarff needed a big game in the paint against Gelsinger, who is tough on the boards for Greencastle-Antrim. … Erin Holt hit a pair of 3s and added 8 points for Lancaster Catholic. In four postseason games, she has eight 3s, and Holt has 18 treys in the last seven games for the Crusaders.
